What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which young people and adults gain and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to their personal, social, and academic development. It helps students to:
Establish Healthy Identities
Students develop self-awareness, enabling them to understand their emotions and thoughts and how these influence their behavior across various settings.
Manage Emotions and Achieve Personal and Collective Goals
Students learn how to effectively manage their emotions and behaviors in different situations, promoting personal growth and contributing positively to their communities.
Feel and Show Empathy for Others
Students cultivate the ability to take the perspectives of and empathize with others, fostering compassion and connection.
Establish and Maintain Supportive Relationships
Students build and maintain healthy, supportive relationships by communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, working collaboratively to solve problems, approaching conflict constructively, providing leadership, and seeking or offering help when needed.
Make Responsible and Caring Decisions
Students learn to make thoughtful, compassionate, and positive choices about personal behavior and social interactions in various situations.

SEL is Critical For Several Reasons:
-
Addressing Socioeconomic and Community Challenges:
Many communities across California, particularly those with high levels of poverty and exposure to violence, experience stressors that negatively impact students' ability to learn and thrive. SEL provides them with the tools to build resilience, manage emotions, and cope with stress effectively. -
Improving Academic Performance:
Research shows that integrating SEL into the school environment can significantly enhance students’ academic achievement. When students feel safe, supported, and understood, they are better able to focus on learning and attending school consistently. -
Reducing Behavioral Issues and Dropout Rates:
By teaching conflict resolution, empathy, and positive decision-making, SEL reduces bullying, aggression, and other harmful behaviors. It helps prevent dropout rates by keeping students engaged and motivated to succeed in school. -
Promoting Mental Health:
SEL helps address mental health concerns early on by teaching coping strategies and fostering positive relationships. This proactive approach is especially important in underserved communities where mental health resources may be limited. -
Preparing Students for High School and Beyond:
Building foundational social-emotional skills in elementary and middle school prepares students to navigate the increased challenges of high school and adulthood. It helps them make responsible decisions and build healthy relationships that contribute to their personal and professional success.
