Assessment Accountability

The Department of Assessment and Accountability coordinates and implements local and state testing programs. Data and statistics collected from Corning Elementary schools are used to identify trends and educational needs. The Assessment and Accountability Office also:

Coordinates and analyzes state assessments and student data
Maintains student enrollment data and submits student data to state agencies
Provides support to schools on student discipline and attendance
Supports schools with student enrollment and transfers

The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. The Corning Union Elementary School District has developed an assessment system that incorporates classroom assessments (the primary means to inform instruction and learning), district assessments, and state-mandated assessments.

Classroom Assessments

Elementary school students are assessed for academic progress throughout the year. Teachers use standards-aligned quizzes, tests, and projects to determine student progress towards meeting grade-level standards and to provide instruction; and practice, reteaching, and enrichment activities. Parents are informed of student progress with progress reports, report cards, and a California Assessment and Accountability System of Progress and Performance (CAASPP) Parent Report.

District Level Testing

The District administers benchmark assessments to all students in reading, writing, and math three times a year. These assessments measure student growth throughout the year and provide valuable data to classroom teachers and grade-level teams.

State-Mandated Assessments

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System has replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. It is comprised of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and includes a computer adaptive test and a performance task based on the Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. 5th and 8th-grade students also take the California Standards Test (CST) in science. The results of these assessments are used to guide instruction, monitor student progress, and inform the academic program in the district.
