Independent Study

We understand that family needs or travel may occasionally require your child to be away from school. To help students stay on track, our district offers Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) for 1–15 school days per year. This program allows students to maintain their learning during an absence and return to class ready to continue without gaps.

What Parents Need to Know Before Requesting Independent Study
  • Requests must be made through your school office at least 10 school days in advance of the planned absence.
  • Independent Study is available for a minimum of 1 day and a maximum of 15 school days per year. Requests that exceed the 15-day annual limit cannot be approved; absences beyond that limit will be marked unexcused.
  • The school will review student eligibility, including attendance, grades, behavior, and prior completion of Independent Study assignments.
  • Approval is based on each student’s individual record. If a family requests Independent Study for multiple children, some requests may be approved while others may not.
  • A Master Agreement must be signed by both the parent/guardian and the student before the Independent Study begins.
  • All assignments must be completed and turned in on the first day the student returns to school. Attendance and academic credit are based on the completion of all assigned work.
  • Instruction will be provided by the student’s current teacher through packet work or Google Classroom.
  • Parent supervision and support are essential to help ensure the student completes all assignments on time.

Short-Term Independent Study is a voluntary program designed to keep students engaged in learning while away from the classroom.

We encourage families to contact their school office with any questions or to begin the request process.
