Attendance
If Your Child Will Be Absent

If Your Child Will Be Absent
Please contact your child’s school office as soon as possible whenever your child will be absent or late to school. Families should provide the reason for the absence so school staff can accurately update the student’s attendance record.
Whenever possible, families are encouraged to:
- Schedule appointments and family travel outside of school hours or school days.
- Establish consistent bedtime and morning routines.
- Allow extra travel time so students arrive before school begins.
- Communicate with the school when circumstances are affecting regular attendance.

Need Help With Attendance?
Sometimes attendance challenges are connected to transportation, health, family circumstances, school concerns, or other barriers. We want families to reach out before attendance becomes a bigger concern.
Your child’s School Site Wellness Coach is available to help families identify barriers, connect with available resources, and work with school staff to support improved attendance.
Families may also contact their school principal or school office for assistance.
Regular attendance and arriving at school on time help students build strong routines, stay connected to their classroom, and make consistent academic progress. Even occasional absences and tardies can add up over time and result in students missing important instruction and practice.
CUESD partners with families to support regular school attendance and remove barriers that may make it difficult for a student to attend school consistently.

Absences, Tardies & Truancy
California law requires regular school attendance for students who are subject to compulsory education. Repeated unexcused absences, tardies, or early departures may result in a student being identified as truant and may require additional school or district intervention.
Our goal is to work collaboratively with families whenever attendance concerns arise and provide support whenever possible.

Planning an Extended Absence?
If you know your child will need to miss several consecutive school days, contact your school before the absence to discuss whether a short-term Independent Study option may be appropriate and available.
Approval and requirements apply, so families should contact the school as early as possible.
