Thank you for your interest in volunteering in our schools!
Parents, guardians, family members, and community volunteers are important partners in supporting our students and schools. Whether you are helping in a classroom, reading with students, attending a field trip, mentoring a student, or assisting with athletics, your time and involvement make a difference.
New Online Volunteer Application Process
CUESD has updated its volunteer application and screening process to meet current California student safety requirements and to provide a consistent process across all District schools.
All individuals wishing to volunteer must begin by completing the CUESD Online Volunteer Application through Raptor VolunteerSafe.
Volunteer Levels and Roles
Volunteer requirements depend on the type of activity you will participate in and the level of supervision involved.
Level 1: On-Site Supervised Volunteer
Level 1 volunteers work with students on a school campus while under the direct supervision of District staff and are never left alone with students.
Examples may include:
- Classroom volunteers
- Classroom reading volunteers
- Meal duty Helper
- Library Helper
Requirements:
- TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire
- Mandated Reporter Training
- Workers’ Compensation Form
- Site Administrator approval (meeting with individual to review expectations and to sign volunteer conduct acknowledgment page)
Important: A volunteer who serves 16 or more hours per month may be required to complete fingerprinting/background clearance regardless of the volunteer assignment.
Level 2: On- or Off-Site Volunteer
Level 2 volunteers participate in activities where they may interact with or supervise students outside the direct supervision of District staff, including activities that take place away from the school campus.
The primary difference between Level 1 and Level 2 is that a Level 2 volunteer may, at times, interact with or supervise students without a District employee immediately present.
Examples may include:
- Field trip volunteers
- Overnight Chaperones
- Recess game helper
- Reading Pals
- Mentor (students)
- Reading tutors
- Community School Event volunteers
- Office Helper
Requirements:
- TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire
- Mandated Reporter Training
- Workers’ Compensation Form
- Fingerprint/Background Check clearance
- Site Administrator approval (meeting with individual to review expectations and to sign volunteer conduct acknowledgment page)
Level 4 – Athletics Coach/Assistant Coach
A volunteer coach or assistant coach is an individual who, with District authorization, voluntarily provides instruction to or supervision of students participating in District-sponsored or District-sanctioned athletic programs or events.
Requirements:
- TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire
- Mandated Reporter Training
- Workers’ Compensation Form
- Fingerprint/Background Check clearance
- Required coaching and student-safety training, which may include CPR, concussion training, and other applicable certifications
Clearance Requirements
Mandated Reporter Training
California law has expanded child abuse prevention and mandated reporter requirements for school volunteers. Volunteers will receive information about the required training as part of the application and clearance process.
The training helps volunteers understand how to recognize and appropriately report suspected child abuse or neglect.
Fingerprinting & Background Checks
Fingerprinting and DOJ background checks are required for volunteer assignments involving greater independence or supervision of students and for volunteers who meet applicable service-hour requirements.
If your volunteer assignment requires fingerprinting & background check, your school site will provide instructions for completing the process.
TB Risk Assessment
Volunteers who work with students must complete the required tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment documentation. CUESD District Nurse conducts the TB Risk Assessment.
Worker's Compensation Coverage
CUESD adopted a Board Resolution to cover authorized volunteers for the purpose of Workers' Compensation Benefits. Your School site will provide instructions for completing this process.
Application Timeline
What Happens After You Apply?
Step 1 – Submit Your Online Application
Complete the CUESD Volunteer Application through Raptor VolunteerSafe and select the school site and volunteer role that best match where and how you would like to volunteer.
Step 2 – Your School Site Reviews Your Application
Your selected school site will receive your application through Raptor VolunteerSafe. School staff will review your requested volunteer role and determine the appropriate volunteer clearance level.
Step 3 – Complete Your Required Clearances
The school site will contact you with information about any additional requirements you need to complete. Depending on your volunteer role, this may include:
-
TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire
-
Mandated Reporter Training
-
Fingerprinting/Background Check
-
Additional role-specific training or certifications
Not every volunteer role requires the same clearances.
Step 4 – Site Administrator Approval
Once all required documentation and clearances have been completed, you will be scheduled to meet with the Site Administrator. The Site Administrator will review the volunteer expectations handbook with you, answer questions, and provide additional information. Site Administrators provide the final approval.
Step 5 – Begin Volunteering
You may begin volunteering after you have been notified that your application is approved and all required clearances are complete.
Please do not begin volunteer service until you have received approval from the school site.
Difference between a Visitor and a Volunteer
A visitor is someone who comes to campus to attend a meeting, conference, performance, assembly, family event, or other school activity, but is not assisting with or supervising students.
A volunteer is someone who gives their time to support students, staff, or school programs. This may include helping in a classroom, reading with students, mentoring, chaperoning a field trip, assisting with recess activities, coaching, or supporting other school programs.
A simple way to think about it:
If you are coming to attend, you are generally a visitor.
If you are coming to help, supervise, instruct, or support, you are generally a volunteer.
If you are coming to attend, you are generally a visitor.
If you are coming to help, supervise, instruct, or support, you are generally a volunteer.
Visitors may still be required to report to the school office and check in through Raptor VisitorSafe, depending on the activity and campus access involved.
Volunteers must complete the CUESD volunteer application process and any required screening or clearance steps before beginning volunteer service.
If you are unsure whether an activity requires volunteer clearance, please contact the school office.
